My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 1

It’s New Years Day. It is a time for people to start on their resolutions they made. Like millions of people around the world, I will be joining them. My resolution, like many others, is to lose weight. Not just 20 pounds, but a lot. Enough to save me from having to go the weight loss surgery route.

A few months back, I had some bad test results. This worried my Doctor enough that she said “I believe this calls for immediate change in strategy.” A phone appointment later, and she was talking weight loss surgery.

Avoiding the Surgery

Today I start at 367.6lbs. Tomorrow I will take other body measurements, and “before” pictures. Now comes the time for me to do my part. I need to lose this weight. I now it can’t come off overnight, and some days I will even gain weight. Still, I must continue on the path. I need to be one of the few that can keep their New Year’s Resolution.

I have not not discussed what I have to do to move forward with the surgery. My doctor was ok with me not doing it, if I were to do my part.

To me, I need to make a dramatic enough change, that it leaves the surgery option off the table in my doctors mind.

Now I make the plan, and set it in motion

Back in 2013/2014 I was making great strides in losing my weight. Not only losing weight, but becoming stronger and healthier overall.

With this in mind, I try to get back into what worked for me before.

  1. Get support.
  2. Get eating under control
  3. Exercise
  4. Sleep

My family does support me some, but I need to be the lead on inspiration. I don’t have a local network of people (Stay at home Dad, so I don’t get out much) I do have supportive people online. Some Facebook friends, and others at specifically the Challenge forums.

To aide in my journey, I have created a new challenge thread at Nerd Fitness.  Back to some basics. The goals I set there will help my with my above issues.

I need to remember to take a slow and steady course of action. My brain wants to jump in 200%, but I know that will not work.

I’m going Keto

I’ve played with Ketosis a bit, but now I am jumping in full steam ahead. Low carbs, plenty of fats and proteins. I’ve done similar eating in the past with Whole30. It’s all about eating well. Dropping that sugar and carb demon. I’m also getting back into tracking what I eat. Time to use MyFitnessPal again to track all the numbers.

Walk this way

I need exercise. Of course, you can lose weight without exercise. I am choosing to exercise for other benefits as well. To start, I am just going with walking. 3 times a week should be a slow enough pace to get me moving. If my body wants more though, I am sure I can. I plan to build up to walking everyday for at least 30 minutes a time. Then I can move on to running, and body weight exercises. Eventually weight training as well. Sky’s the limit, but first I need to start.

No more Night Owl

I have always been the night owl. Many, many nights I have been up till 2 or 3am. This needs to end. I have a CPAP machine to help with sleep apnea issues. Now I just need to try getting a reliable amount of sleep. I’m headed to bed by 12:30am. It will be hard to do it at first, but I am working on my wind down routine. Shutting down the electronics, and reading.

This was my New Year’s Eve nights of sleep

2:29am to 9:35 am. Woke up for a bit around 5:30am as well.

32 minutes awake, 1hr 23minutes in REM, 4hrs of light sleep, and 1hr 11minutes deep sleep.

This needs to improve. I might not be able to get to 8 good hours of sleep yet, but I need to try.

This is just the Start

So here we go 2018. Time for me to take on this challenge. I’m going to post everyday. This way I can track my mental state, and celebrate the daily victories when I can.

Today’s victory

We saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I didn’t partake in the popcorn. the wife wanted to know what we should eat for lunch. Of course the little kid wants McDonalds. My wife offered to go to one of my favorite places, King Eggroll Express. I declined. Instead, I grabbed a Bacon Ranch Grilled Chicken Salad from McDonalds. No dressing. I have zero carb dressing I can use at home. I turned down Eggrolls though. I must want this pretty bad 😉

  1. Great job staying away from those bad foods! you did great and it’s not always easy, I know. I always keep almonds or candied pecans in my truck in case I get stuck and need a snack so that may help. Also if you haven’t had crack slaw it’s amazing and along with chicken crust pizza, it’s a game changer for sure. if you need any help or just support let me know. I am also a stay at home father so we have that in common.
