My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 130

Another day of not too much excitement. 🙂 My ankle is feeling better. Had a few pain jolts, but not too bad. I did consider going out for a walk, but decided not to push. I did go to bowling, though I bowled really badly.

A few weeks back, I did the 23andMe.com Health + Ancestry kit. I got in results today. No major issues popped up in the health portion.

I did have these:

Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HFE‑Related)

Hereditary hemochromatosis is a genetic condition characterized by absorption of too much dietary iron. This may lead to iron overload, which can cause damage to the joints and certain organs, such as the liver, skin, heart, and pancreas. This test includes the two most common variants linked to this condition.

William, you have one of the two genetic variants we tested.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is caused by certain combinations of genetic variants. People with only one copy of this variant are not likely at risk of developing iron overload related to hereditary hemochromatosis.

Seems like nothing to be concerned of here really.

William, your genes predispose you to weigh about 6% more than average.

This predisposition doesn’t mean you will definitely weigh more than average. Keep in mind that your lifestyle and environment have a big impact on your weight.

Dang it! I am big boned! haha. Honestly, nothing major. Nothing here keeping me from a healthy lifestyle.

William, your genetic muscle composition is common in elite power athletes.

Studies have found that almost all elite power athletes (including sprinters, throwers, and jumpers) have a specific genetic variant in a gene related to muscle composition. You have the same genetic variant as these elite athletes.

Ohh yeah man. Time to get my inner athlete on! I should totally be lifting stuff 😉

Overall, pretty neat stuff. I got to see I have a bit more of British and Irish in my then I knew.

I also thought there would be more Native American since I had some relatives on both sides of the family. Just a long time ago I guess.

Wednesday

Will just give a quick update from yesterday.

Food:

04/09 MyFitnessPal – 1755 Calories, 15 net carbs, 52 oz of water tracked

Sleep:

12:12 am to 8:10 am. 6 hrs 48 mins. 19 x awake for 1 hrs 10 mins total. I didn’t get in my reading last night. Instead I finished watching Lost in Space on Netflix. Got into bed on time, but really did not sleep well.

Exercise:

No exercise done. Just a few steps in. 2131 steps.

Tomorrow

Taking my car in for some service. My son is also sick, so he has a doctor’s appointment. I don’t think I will walk, but I may. I think I might rest more, and just focus on getting some things done around the house. I did that a bit today.

My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 129

Today, hasn’t been so exciting. I decided to take a rest day. My ankle is hurting a bit. I figured rest would be better then trying to push it. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Worse case, I’ll just walk.

Tuesday

Yesterday was actually a decent day. I felt the ankle pain, but still went out for a walk. Even went out for two walks to finish off the step goal.

Food:

05/08 MyFitnessPal – 1618 Calories, 18 net carbs, 76 oz of water tracked.

Sleep:

12:15 am to 8:14 am. 7 hrs 7 mins. 11 x awake for 52 mins. I had a bit of a rough time getting to sleep, and then had a few wake ups.

Exercise:

9,219 steps. 119 active minutes

This Week

Well, not too exciting for today. So hopefully, I can re pick things up the rest of the week. Here is hoping my ankle feels well enough to do something tomorrow.

My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 128

Yesterday was amazing! Well, at least it felt amazing. 🙂

I started off with my C25k Week 2 Day 1 run.

Missed a run last week, but went ahead and started week 2.

A post shared by William R. Tate (@wrtate) on

I was pretty happy that I finished that. I worried it was too much for me to handle. I just kept going though. Since I knew I upped my step goal to 8,000 steps, I had to get in all the steps I could. I walked around the park after the run.

This put me in a really good spot before it was even midday.

Before I went to bowling, I was already over the 8,000 step threshold. I knew I had my daily goal, now it was just how many extra would I get.

Bowling went well as well.

Looks like I messed up the 215 triplicate haha 😂

A post shared by William R. Tate (@wrtate) on

Yup, I messed up that 3rd game and missed out on the triplicate 215! haha. I was perfectly happy to miss out, because the guy I bowled against was pretty close to me as well. I checked the stats, and had 23 strike and 7 spares. 3 splits on the night. So pretty pleased.

At the end of the day, I hit 10,421 steps.99 active minutes. I can tell I really pushed it yesterday, because my legs have been really sore.

Today

I got out and walked this morning. Plus another small bit when picking up my son from school. I’m at 6,800 right now. Still more work to be done! I may hit up a small walk after my raid tonight. I also didn’t pay attention to my carbs, and am already at 17 net carbs today. Dinner will be lite on the carbs for sure. Oddly enough, I had a dream last night, that I accidentally went over my carb limit for the day. Then I went crazy with all the eating. It would be how I would do it in the past for sure.

My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 127

Here we are, a new week. Time to get refocused on my goals, and prep for having a successful week.

I started off today with C25k Week 2 Day 1. I moved my step goals up to 8,000 per day, and I am sitting at 7,500 right now. I still need to bowl tonight. 🙂

I’m starting off the week strong. Let’s see how last week was.

Week Review

It was a tough week, at least at the end. Two days I shut down. Kept food and sleep goals in, but exercise went to nil.

Weight Loss:

It wasn’t much this week, but I did lose weight. 1.7 lbs this week. Bringing me to 314.7 lbs. Total since the 1st of January, I have lost 52.9 lbs. I am hoping the stall I had is gone. The last couple of days is where my weight start to drop off again.

Food:

04/30 MyFitnessPal – 1783 Calories, 13 net carbs, 91 oz of water tracked
05/01 MyFitnessPal – 1657 Calories, 11 net carbs, 64 oz of water tracked
05/02 MyFitnessPal – 1561 Calories, 13 net carbs, 54 oz of water tracked
05/03 MyFitnessPal – 1817 Calories, 13 net carbs, 76 oz of water tracked
05/04 MyFitnessPal – 1571 Calories, 14 net carbs, 52 oz of water tracked
05/05 MyFitnessPal – 1482 Calories, 17 net carbs, 51 oz of water tracked
05/06 MyFitnessPal – 1649 Calories, 11 net carbs, 79 oz of water tracked

Food was fine this week. Even when I was mentally out of doing any exercise, I tried to stay focused with my food. There were a couple of days that I finished eating after 6 pm, but I had started before that. I was just late on making my food.

Sleep:

05/01 – 12:07 am to 6:48 am. 5 hrs 49 mins. 9 x awake for 52 mins.
05/02 – 12:10 am to 8:51 am. 7 hrs 51 mins. 20 x awake for 50 mins.
05/03 – 12:01 am to 8:31 am. 7 hrs 54 mins. 16 x awake for 44 mins.
05/04 – 11:38 pm to 6:57 am. 6 hrs 49 mins. 22 x awake for 30 mins.
05/05 – 12:08 pm to 9:28 am. 8 hrs 24 mins. 22 x awake for 56 mins.
05/06 – 12:21 am to 8:04 am. 6 hrs 54 mins. 19 x awake for 49 mins.
05/07 – 1:01 am to 8:03 am. 6 hrs 39 mins. 14 x awake for 56 mins.

All nights, I got in my reading, and was off to bed on time. Last night I got to bed, but didn’t get to sleeping until close to 1.

Exercise:

04/30 – 8,845 steps. 106 active minutes. C25k Week 1 Day 1 repeat done.
05/01 – 7,577 steps. 92 active minutes.
05/02 – 8,692 steps. 100 active minutes. C25k Week 1 Day 2 repeat done.
05/03 – 7,246 steps. 86 active minutes.
05/04 – 1,788 steps. 0 active minutes.
05/05 – 663 steps. 0 active minutes.
05/06 – 7,444 steps. 85 active minutes.

I planned to have one rest day, but I got in two this last week. The mental barrier was strong, and it kept me down. Sunday I had enough of that though, and got in my steps at least.

This Week

Time to get everything back going. Today is going well, and I need to ride all that into each new day. One day at a time.

My Journey to a Healthy Me, Days 124-126

Well, the last couple of days have not been too good for me. It was mostly mental really. Then mind walls went up, and I just couldn’t get going to do anything for exercise. Food was fine, sleep was even fine. I didn’t get day 3 of C25k. I didn’t even get 1000 steps yesterday it was so bad. Just days where I wanted to do nothing. I was just in a big old funk.

I had a doctors appointment on Friday.  I was down quite a bit of weight from the last time I was in. So that was good. It seemed though, she wasn’t all that on board with Keto. Like I am pretty sure she thinks it is a bunch of eating red meat and no vegetables or something. I told her I don’t always have bacon, but sometimes I do. The most meat I have is chicken. Even with that, I get vegetable in too. There are vegetarians that can still eat and be in ketosis. She just kept talking about there wasn’t many long term studies, but there has been for eating vegetarian. She wasn’t going to tell me to become a vegetarian, but she would recommend going that direction. I also got back on a couple of medications. Not to control blood sugar, but more of a protector for my kidneys and other organs. I still do have diabetes, but it is controlled with diet. I wasn’t there to try to convince her she was wrong though. I will continue to do my thing. I’ve looked up enough information that I am perfectly fine with eating Keto, and how much damage carbs can cause. Otherwise, things were fine. My blood pressure was amazing. At least that is what the nurse taking it said. My fasting blood tests were great. Lower then they ever were when I was doing lower carbs, or whole30 eating.

I left the doctor’s office, and felt really good. I was going to come home and at least walk. I just didn’t want to go right away, because I didn’t want to get too hot out there. Then the mental walls went up. Maybe it was some of the doctor stuff, maybe it was more freak out moments from our future being up in the air still. I’m not exactly sure. I felt I was fine with the doctor stuff, but clearly it bugged me a bit.

I feel that I am having a bit of a mental drain too, and it shows in my bowling as well.

Today, I was done with the pity party though. I got up this morning, and got in a 3 mile walk. I came home and showered. Then got ready to head up to Castro Valley to bowl in match club today. They were serving a meal today for us. I didn’t want any part of it though. So I ate before I left, and had a few pork rinds right before I went in. I avoided the food. I bowled OK. We did well enough. Then I grabbed some Wingstop on the way home. Walking and bowling got me my step goal today. I am back on it.

The last few days

Food:

05/03 MyFitnessPal – 1817 Calories, 13 net carbs, 76 oz of water tracked
05/04 MyFitnessPal – 1571 Calories, 14 net carbs, 52 oz of water tracked
05/05 MyFitnessPal – 1482 Calories, 17 net carbs, 51 oz of water tracked

Overall, food is still going fine. I ate with in my eating windows, though a couple I was finishing eating after 6 pm. Water got tracked as well.

Sleep:

05/04 – 11:38 pm to 6:57 am. 6 hrs 49 mins. 22 x awake for 30 mins.
05/05 – 12:08 pm to 9:28 am. 8 hrs 24 mins. 22 x awake for 56 mins.
05/06 – 12:21 am to 8:04 am. 6 hrs 54 mins. 19 x awake for 49 mins.

I got my reading done, and was off my pc on time. Last night, I had a little later to bed, just because I hit the bathroom first. I even went to bed earlier one night, because I knew I would need to get up early for my doctors appointment.

Exercise:

05/03 – 7,246 steps. 86 active minutes
05/04 – 1,788 steps. 0 active minutes
05/05 – 663 steps. 0 active minutes

As you can see, those last two day were horrible. I did hit my step goal today though.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is a new day. 🙂 I think I will try to run week 2 of C25k. I need to get out there early while I am in the mood. Then, I need to get some weekly recaps done for the blog here, and my Nerdfitness thread.

My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 123

Well, I have made cheesecake!

It is the first time I have ever made a cheesecake before. I followed Headbangerskitchen.com’s recipe for his Keto Berry Cheesecake. My tin was a little smaller, so cook times were off a bit. I think I may have over baked it a bit. The flavor is still great though.

I got out for a walk this morning. Though, I don’t think I got in enough steps to cover me for the day. I still have bowling, but I have a feeling I will be shy of my step goal. If so, then I’ll have to get out for a second walk. 🙂

I had talked to a Verizon rep in the store yesterday about the problems with my phone. They sent a refurbished replacement phone to me today. I hope to have no more random reboots! Only time will tell.

Wednesday

Wednesday was a good day overall. I had to fight it a bit, but it worked out well. The biggest battle was making myself get out there and run. I almost gave in, but just pushed forward.

Food:

05/02 MyFitnessPal – 1561 Calories, 13 net carbs, 54 oz of water tracked. Ate with in my eating window. Blood sugar this morning seemed fine as well. So hopefully, that is stabilizing again.

Sleep:

12:01 am to 8:39 am. 7 hr 54 mins total. 16 x awake for 44 mins. A little restless again last night. Woke up in the morning, but really didn’t want to wake up all the way haha. I got in my reading, and was off the computer a bit before 11 pm.

Exercise:

Fitbit had me at 8,692 steps 100 active minutes. I completed my repeat of C25k week 1 Day 2. Even finished it faster then other days last week, and felt like I wanted to die after each run. 😉

Tomorrow

I have a doctor’s appointment at 8:30 am. Blood work looked good. I also need to get a Hep B vaccine shot while I am there. I also need to figure out when I am going to go for a run. I either have to go once I am home, or I try to get it in Saturday before my son’s bowling (if we go).

My Journey to a Healthy Me, Day 122

This morning, I did not want to go out and run. I was trying to fight it so much. Checking other things, trying to delay it until I gave in. Too bad for fat me, I did it anyway. 🙂

Even when I was doing the runs, I wanted to stop. I had to keep telling myself I could do it. It felt like I was done after each run. Like no way I could push to do another. I just kept trying. Funny enough, It is the farthest I have done. I was pushing harder then I wanted to, even with me wanting to stop. Healthy me, back behind the scenes, taking over! I was happy that I did it, and did not give into the “done run” impulses.

In phone news, Verizon is sending me a replacement for my phone. Should be here tomorrow. I hope that it will not crash on me like the current one has been.

I also made cheesecake a bit ago. It’s cooling now. I’ll take pictures tomorrow when I take it out of the fridge. First time I ever made a cheesecake.

Tuesday

I failed at trying to make low carb tortilla. I went on a couple of walks to get in my steps. I also picked up my car from the service department, and played with some friends online for a bit. Got to reading, and bed on time.

Food:

05/01 MyFitnessPal – 1657 Calories, 11 net carbs, 64 oz of water tracked. Pretty boring day food wise I suppose. I had hoped to perfect those tortillas, and have some tacos. Eating done in my eating window, so Intermittent fasting is still going well. Blood sugars were also decent levels yesterday.

Sleep:

12:10 am to 8:51 am. 7 hrs 51 mins. 20 x awake for 50 mins total. I woke up a few times last night that I can remember. So sleep was a little broken up. Here is to hoping I get some solid sleep tonight!

Exercise:

7,577 steps. 92 active minutes. Walk one in the morning. My son was sick, so there would be no extra steps picking him up from school. I headed out for a second walk, after I was done playing World of Warcraft. I almost didn’t do it. The healthy me prevailed again.

This Week

More planning. Wife has been applying to a few places. So we are starting to get things ready to pack up. Even if she gets a decent job up here, we will need to move. Hopefully, finding a place here.

I’ve got a few more recipes I want to make. First, I need to get the dishes done!

I’ll have bowling at night, so I need to get most my steps in my morning walk.
